Great British Design Quest
The Great British Design Quest is a vote to discover the public's favourite British design icon.
Organised by the Design Museum and The Culture Show, the vote opens with a shortlist of 25 which includes icons as varied as the London A-Z, Grand Theft Auto, the Penguin paperback and the Verdana typeface (which you are reading now!).
The chosen designs are beautiful to look at, function with ease, or feature an innovative use of technology and materials.
Over the coming weeks the icons will be narrowed down to a Top 10, followed by a Top 3 and a final winner. Visit the BBC's Culture Show webpage to place your vote.
Several of the top 25 icons are featured on Scran, including the Raleigh Chopper, the Dr. Marten's boot, the mini skirt, Concorde and the Sgt Pepper's album cover. Each Scran image is accompanied by text relating to the icon's creator, manufacturer and historical importance.
Scran's 20th Century design collections are extensive. If you would like to arrange free CPD on how to use Scran in the teaching of Art & Design or Design & Technology, contact Lee McCulley, Educational Development Officer on 0131 662 1211 or lee.mcculley@scran.ac.uk
