Scran Developed Union of the Crowns Website Launched

24th March, 2003

union of the crownsA new website to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Union of the Crowns was launched on 24th March 2003 by Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Eric Milligan. This Scran-developed website is an educational resource which tells the story of how both crowns became united. It uses records provided by contributors from both Scotland and around the United Kingdom.

Speaking at the launch, Edinburgh Lord Provost Eric Milligan, Chair of the Union of the Crowns Advisory Group, added:

“This excellent new website tells users the story of how the crowns became united, and allows them to benefit from the wide range of multi-media and value-added materials developed with learning in mind."

Union of the Crowns website includes sections on:

King James VI & I - The Story – divided into chapters such as ‘Background,’ ‘A Royal Childhood,’ ‘A Guid King?,’ ‘Previous Conflicts,’‘The Way Paved,’ and ‘The Crowns United,’ these illustrated essays will provide a look at the reasons why the Union happened the way it did.

Timeline - detailing the series of events that led to the Union of the Crowns in 1603, providing links to the other parts of the site.

People - giving biographies of some of the major figures such as Henry VII, Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI.

Places - providing details of some of the buildings looked after by Historic Scotland associated with the story.

Calendar of Events – highlighting the various events running through the year to mark the 400th anniversary.

Further Information – website links and a reading list provided by Edinburgh University to allow more detailed study.
