Searching & Linking

15th July, 2008

Here's a couple of Top Tips for creating links to Scran.

Many of you will know about Scran's persistent links.  That means you can link to any record directly if you know the Scran ID. The Scran ID is a number shown under each image eg for the above image, it is 000-000-625-510-C.

Persistent Direct Links

So, typing in http://www.scran.ac.uk/000-000-625-510-C will take you straight to the record without going through the front page or searching. You can do that from anywhere on the Internet - you don't need to be on the Scran website.

You need

  • the scran address http://www.scran.ac.uk
  • a slash /
  • and then the ID number 000-000-625-510-C
  • http://www.scran.ac.uk/000-000-625-510-C

Direct Simple Searches

You can do a similar thing with quick simple search from a web address too.

Type http://www.scran.ac.uk/s/tennis and a search for tennis is carried out and you go immediately to the search results page. Again, you can do this from anywhere on the web.  You don't need to be at the Scran website.

You need

  • the Scran address http://www.scran.ac.uk
  • a slash /
  • s for search
  • a slash /
  • and then the search term tennis
  • http://www.scran.ac.uk/s/tennis

It behaves exactly as if you'd typed it in the top right search box.

This is very handy for creating links on your own web page for either yourself or people you support or teach.
