Edwin Morgan R.I.P.

20th August, 2010

Edwin Morgan, who has died at the age of 90, was probably Scotland's best-known living poet. Known as Glasgow's Poet Laureate, he was also a critic and translator.

He established his poetic reputation in 1968 with the publication of 'The Second Life' and a wealth of his verse came into print in numerous volumes. His 'Instamatic Poems' of 1972 were followed by 'From Glasgow to Saturn' which explored his personal fascination with space and science fiction. His 'Sonnets from Scotland' in 1984 were also science fiction poems. Large collections have been 'Sonnets of Thirty Years' (1982), 'Selected Poems' (1985) and 'Collected Poems' in 1990. 'New Selected Poems' brought his output up to date in 2000.

Morgan was appointed OBE in 1982. In 1999, he was made Glasgow's first poet laureate and the following year he was awarded the Queen's gold medal for poetry. In 2004, he was named "Scots Makar", the national poet for Scotland.
