Aspects of Daily Life in Scandinavian Scotland
Created by Dr Colleen Batey, Lecturer in Archaeology, University of Glasgow
What kind of resource is this?
Two separate but related parts of a module on the Vikings in Scotland.
Part 1:
Six specific artefact studies with model answers. These are designed to enable learners to approach and interrogate other artefacts on the database in the same manner.
Part 2:
An overview of the archaeological evidence for the Vikings and Late Norse in Scotland, encompassing settlement, pagan grave, hoard and ruinic evidence. This builds on the records currently on Scran, supplying a context and links to further relevant records. It also provides suggestions for further reading.

Who was it designed for?
Students studying for a ‘Vikings in Scotland’ module at undergraduate Honours level.
Points of interest:
Authored by one of the country’s leading experts on the Vikings – Colleen Batey is curator of archaeology at Glasgow museums, lecturer in archaeology at the University of Glasgow and the author of a number of books on Viking and Late Norse archaeology in Scotland and the North Atlantic - these materials illustrate a very structured approach to supporting learners in their use of Scran. Dr Batey has drawn together relevant Scran records, provided additional context, and aims to support individual interrogation of Scran through the study of suggested links and the encouragement of further independent work.
