The Vikings influenced British history and culture for centuries. Some Vikings came as raiders in the eighth and ninth centuries, but many more stayed as settlers during the following years. Especially in the north of England and Scotland descendants of Vikings shaped the language and landscape of these regions. The first praise poem for an English king was possibly composed by a Viking.

The Viking Age module allows students to discover a period of great changes and upheaval in Europe through the study of text and other interdisciplinary tools, such as archaeology and art. The course will familiarise students with traditional research tools, but also introduce them to electronic databases, search tools and internet resources. Students will present their research on WebCT, an interactive learning environment and discuss their evidence in class.
