Thomas Geddes was born in 1891 in Aberdeenshire, and served as a Serjeant (sic) in Company “C” of the 7th Battalion the Royal Scots Fusiliers during World War One. He was killed at the Battle of Loos in 1915 at the age of only 24, almost certainly as a result of what is now called "friendly fire". These artefacts, kindly licensed to Scran by his great-nephew Ian McCracken, tell something of his story.

[1107] Auschwitz
Photographer Derek Fleming has kindly shared his evocative and moving portraits of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. While the site was the scene of Nazi atrocities until 1945, today it stands as a memorial to these horrifying events. As well as being superb documents of the subject, the photos are of an extremely high technical and aesthetic quality. Derek's (mostly) monochromatic images of the remains of the camp are now available for all Scran subscribers to use in learning about, teaching and understanding this difficult and troubling aspect of the Second World War.

[1104] HIV & AIDS
Edinburgh accounted for over 40% of the HIV/AIDS cases in the UK in the 1990's and the Lothian Health Board worked hard to produce a range of campaigns to make sure as many people as possible were made aware of the dangers of the disease and how to avoid infection.
The Take Care Campaign was launched in 1989 by the Lothian Health Board as a means of educating the public on the dangers of HIV and the importance of safe sex.Lothian Health Board took part in this National promotional campaign put in place to promote safe sex and good sexual health on a National scale.
Although a large majority of those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS were from Edinburgh and the Lothian's; many awareness campaigns were rolled out across Britain in an attempt to slow the spread of the disease as far as possible.

[1103] Holy Loch Heritage – the American Presence
Holy Loch Heritage – the American Presence aimed to bring to life the 30 year period when the American Naval Base was sited at the Holy Loch, Dunoon. How this came about and the stories that evolved were the subject of this project. Local schools from Dunoon and across Cowal learned about their heritage, interviewing local people with direct experience about this period in time. Participants worked with an oral historian and a film maker to record a range of stories on camera. The project was funded by HLF Sharing Heritage programme.
