[1102] The Linlithgow Mill Stories Project

Thumbnail for project: The Linlithgow Mill Stories ProjectPapermaking was introduced to Linlithgow in 1808, when a grain mill was converted into Lochmill. In 1854 Thomas Chalmers took over the management and later ownership of Lochmill. In 1870 the Avon Mill was established at Linlithgow Bridge by John Lovell. Still a family firm, Avon Mill closed in 1972, followed by Lochmill in 1984. During the Autumn term of 2013, the P6 class of Linlithgow Bridge Primary School and former workers from Linlithgow's paper mills came together to explore the mill stories of their local community. This project showcases some of this work and contains interviews with the mill workers carried out by P6 pupils and other project volunteers.

[1101] Charles in the Heather

Thumbnail for project: Charles in the HeatherModern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. A fugitive in Scotland for six months, he was hounded by his foes and sheltered by his devoted Highland friends, managing to evade capture and escaping to France by boat in September of 1746. The dates appended to each image allow users to plot the journey of the Prince during the months that he was on the run from Government forces. The phrase "Charles in the Heather", incidentally, is taken from Eric Linklater's 1976 book "The Prince In the Heather".  Prof. Cairns Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

[1100] Charles Travels North

Thumbnail for project: Charles Travels NorthModern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) as he travelled north from England. In 1745, he had marched south towards London with a large Jacobite army intent on reclaiming the throne (he had reached as far as Derby before turning back). His journey north was to end in the ultimate defeat of the Jacobite army in 1746 at the Battle of Culloden, and Cairns Aitken has followed in his footsteps recording various points on his journey through England and into the Highlands of Scotland.  Prof. Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

[1099] Charles Travels South

Thumbnail for project: Charles Travels SouthModern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) as he travelled south through Scotland and into England. In 1745, he landed from France and quickly assembled an army of Jacobite sympathisers.  This army marched south, intending to reach London and reclaim the throne that Charles believed was rightfully his; they reached as far as Derby before turning back. In the mid-2000s, Cairns Aitken followed in these Jacobite footsteps, documenting the journey.
