[1064] John Clerk of Eldin
John Clerk of Eldin was a Scottish merchant, naval author, artist, geologist and landowner, and a major figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He was also a notable self-taught artist, and this collection of miniature etchings, depicting the castles and ruins of Scotland in a picturesque manner, show something of his talent.
The pictures themselves have been kindly licensed to Scran by Sir Robert Clerk and Geoffrey Bertram, the owners of the original etchings. The artist's etchings were the subject of a retrospective exhibition at Edinburgh's City Art Centre in late 2012.

[1061] Whytock and Reid
A collection of new records on Scran celebrates the history of Whytock and Reid, premier cabinet makers and upholsterers in Edinburgh for nearly 200 years. Richard Whytock's Edinburgh-based haberdashery, drapery and textiles business partnered with John Reid's Ayrshire cabinetmakers and upholstery firm in 1876 to form Whytock, Reid & Co. Over the years a distinctive Whytock and Reid style of furniture developed, with pieces that could almost pass as antiques.
The company closed in 2004, leaving behind a prestigious legacy, with five generations of the Reid family at the helm. They remain and are remembered as one of Edinburgh’s foremost furniture makers.
