A variety of material has been used including photographs, maps, correspondence, reports and other documents. Many of the items come from the university's John Berry Collection which includes unique material on the development of hydro-electricity in Scotland and its impact on flora, fauna and the natural environment.

Documents and photographs from Dundee University Archives have been used to provide an overview of 19th and 20th century life. The project includes images of homes and interiors, clothing and fashion, transport, inventions and innovations. Subjects range from archaeological expeditions to Egypt, to everyday life in Clackmannanshire. There is also a section on new developments in rural areas and changing patterns of land use.

The journalist and author George Orwell wrote one of the 20th century's most iconic and influential novels, "Nineteen Eighty-Four", on the Scottish island of Jura, from 1946-48. This project looks at the locations he frequented during his time there, and the genesis of his most famous work.
