[1163] Videos of East Kilbride

Thumbnail for project: Videos of East KilbrideAs part of East Kilbride's 70th birthday celebrations in 2017, the town commissioned a series of short films entitled 70 Voices. Made by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, the films celebrate aspects of the town's history from the point of view of various residents. [1161] Shipyard Interviews- Scottish Working People's History Trust

Thumbnail for project: Shipyard Interviews- Scottish Working People's History TrustTwo interviews, recorded in 1997 and newly uploaded to Scran. These interviews, with former employees of Henry Robb's shipyard in Leith, Edinburgh, were conducted by The Scottish Working People’s History Trust, a charitable body which was founded 1992 to champion the cause of working people’s history. It aims to seek out and preserve information and stories about the lives of working people in Scotland and to make that information available to the public. The Trust’s research worker, Dr Ian McDougall, recorded the memories of people from various parts of Scotland and gathered their recollections of their working lives, their homes and families, their education and other experiences in life. The original recordings are deposited with the Archive of Edinburgh University’s School of Scottish Studies.

This collection of images documents the two schemes. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.
