[1139] Shin Hydro-Electric Scheme

Thumbnail for project: Shin Hydro-Electric SchemeThe Shin Hydro-Electric Scheme comprises three power stations: Cassley, Lairg and Shin. These are fed by a system of lochs, waterfalls and dams, the main one being Loch Shin, approximately 15 miles long. This collection of images documents the scheme. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

[1138] Lanark Hydro-Electric Scheme

Thumbnail for project: Lanark Hydro-Electric SchemeThe Lanark Hydro-Electric Scheme comprises only two power stations: Bonnington and Stonebyres. The oldest hydro-electric scheme in Scotland, it was inaugurated in 1926, and is fed by a number of waterfalls, collectively known as the Falls of Clyde. The flow of water is regulated by a number of weirs and outflow systems, and this collection of images documents the scheme. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

Thumbnail for project: Galloway Hydro-Electric SchemeThe Galloway Hydro-Electric scheme comprises six major power stations: Drumjohn, Kendoon, Carsfad, Eralstoun, Glenlee and Tongland, which are fed by a complex of interconnected lochs and reservoirs including Loch Ken, Earlstoun Loch and Carsfad Loch. The flow of water is regulated by a number of man-made dams and tunnels, and this collection of images documents the scheme. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

Thumbnail for project: Lochaber Sea LochsThe Lochaber area in the Scottish Highlands includes a number of sea lochs, which have been photographed for Scran.  As well as bodies of water including Loch Moidart, Loch Nevis and Loch Ailort, the images include Loch nan Uamh, famously associated with Bonnie Prince Charlie's journey. This collection was kindly licensed to Scran by Prof. Cairns Aitken, an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, who became Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retired as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.
