North Lanarkshire was one of the largest coal producing areas in Britain from the 1840s until after World War Two. The project illustrates the conditions experienced by generations of workers both underground and on the surface, as well as domestic conditions within the miners' cottages, commonly referred to as "miners' rows".

Bruce, leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Exhibition, 1902-4 and Isobel Wylie Hutchison, a Scotswoman who explored the Arctic during the first half of this century.

Images with detailed descriptions of the Book of Deer. The Book of Deer is a tenth century illuminated manuscript from North East Scotland. As the only pre-Norman manuscript from this area known as "former Pictland" it provides us with a unique insight into the early church, culture and society of this period.

Illustrative material ranging from medieval manuscripts, early printed books of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to superbly hand-coloured engravings. The majority of this material comes from the celebrated 18th century library formed by Dr William Hunter of East Kilbride.
