This project highlights works featured in F.J. Child's 5-volume 'English and Scottish Popular Ballads' (1882-1898), using a combination of PDF transcripts, photographs and illustrations of locations described, and audio samples of the songs being performed. The multimedia essay will deliver the material in an imaginative way, using audio, moving and still images and text to allow the user to gain a greater understanding of this important area of Scottish culture and history.

[0263] Cave of Gold (Uamh an Oir) (multimedia essay)
This project examines the rich oral tradition of Gaelic song, its people, places and events. Extracts from two key poems of Sorley Maclean and Iain Crichton-Smith - "Uamh an Oir/Cave of Gold" and "Shall Gaelic Die?" - are used in tandem with the songs to deepen understanding of Gaelic culture. Work, religious belief, emigration, homesickness, love, war and loss of loved ones are all explored.
