[0199] The Tiger and The Thistle: Tipu Sultan and the Scots in India, c.1760-1800
This project provides assets from the exhibition of the same name, which was held at the National Gallery of Scotland during the 1999 Edinburgh International Festival. 1999 marked the 200th anniversary of the Storming of Seringapatam by the British on 4th May 1799, and the death of Tipu Sultan, ruler of the kingdom of Mysore in South India. Many Scots had campaigned in India during the four Mysore wars, and their presence is documented by their own drawings, manuscripts and published accounts.
