On September 11th 1997, in a referendum, the people of Scotland voted for the creation of the first Scottish Parliament in almost 300 years. On 9 January 1998, Holyrood was announced as the home for the new Scottish Parliament. In July 1998, Enric Miralles in partnership with RMJM Ltd were declared the winners of the competition to find a designer of the new Parliament building. Construction on the Holyrood site began in April 1999 and the Scottish Parliament found a temporary home in the Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, set just off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. The Holyrood building was officially opened on the 9th of October 2004.
