This is a small project featuring the items which survive relating to a Scot who was enlisted by a recruiting officer in Edinburgh in 1878, and travelled to Africa to fight in one of the many colonial wars of the nineteenth century. From such personal items we struggle to understand the great sweep of history.

[0532] Stanley Spencer's "Shipbuilding on the Clyde"
Stanley Spencer was commissioned as an Official War Artist during World War II. He chose to work on Clydeside, depicting shipbuilding for the war effort. The resulting paintings, intended to hang as a group, now belong to the Imperial War Museum and can be seen in this project. The works are shown in sections, and in scrollable panoramas.

The Victoria and Albert Museum collections have a wealth of Scottish material in several curatorial sections. This project focuses on objects in the V&A which are not well represented in the National Museums of Scotland or by other Scran contributors. The selection includes objects designed by Phoebe Anna Traquair, Jessie M King, George Walton, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret and Frances Macdonald. It also includes a ring which possibly belonged to Mary Queen of Scots.
