[1108] Thomas Geddes
Thomas Geddes was born in 1891 in Aberdeenshire, and served as a Serjeant (sic) in Company “C” of the 7th Battalion the Royal Scots Fusiliers during World War One. He was killed at the Battle of Loos in 1915 at the age of only 24, almost certainly as a result of what is now called "friendly fire". These artefacts, kindly licensed to Scran by his great-nephew Ian McCracken, tell something of his story.

[1107] Auschwitz
Photographer Derek Fleming has kindly shared his evocative and moving portraits of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. While the site was the scene of Nazi atrocities until 1945, today it stands as a memorial to these horrifying events. As well as being superb documents of the subject, the photos are of an extremely high technical and aesthetic quality. Derek's (mostly) monochromatic images of the remains of the camp are now available for all Scran subscribers to use in learning about, teaching and understanding this difficult and troubling aspect of the Second World War.

[1100] Charles Travels North
Modern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) as he travelled north from England. In 1745, he had marched south towards London with a large Jacobite army intent on reclaiming the throne (he had reached as far as Derby before turning back). His journey north was to end in the ultimate defeat of the Jacobite army in 1746 at the Battle of Culloden, and Cairns Aitken has followed in his footsteps recording various points on his journey through England and into the Highlands of Scotland. Prof. Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

[1099] Charles Travels South
Modern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) as he travelled south through Scotland and into England. In 1745, he landed from France and quickly assembled an army of Jacobite sympathisers. This army marched south, intending to reach London and reclaim the throne that Charles believed was rightfully his; they reached as far as Derby before turning back. In the mid-2000s, Cairns Aitken followed in these Jacobite footsteps, documenting the journey.
