Thumbnail for project: Visits to CreteColourful and evocative images everyday life in the Greek island of Crete taken by Cairns Aitken.  Market places, animals, cafe scenes and characterful faces all feature.  Prof. Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. He was born in Dunoon, Argyll in 1933. He has had a life-long interest in photography, and in completing projects. He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for his contribution to the Health Services.

[1080] Normandy 1944

Thumbnail for project: Normandy 1944Normandy, in Northern France, was the location of one of the turning points in the Second World War.  Under German occupation from 1940, it was liberated by allied troops in 1944 in a series of daring landings on its beaches. Cairns Aitken recently revisited the sites of these landings and has kindly agreed to share some of his images with Scran. Prof. Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994. [1079] Arras 1917

Thumbnail for project: Arras 1917Arras is the capital of the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France on the Scarpe river, and the site of a major battle in the First World War. These images,  taken by Cairns Aitken, revisit the cemetery that commemorates the fallen soldiers on both sides some nine decades later, and provide a sobering counterpart to the harrowing images of the battlefield found elsewhere on Scran.  Prof. Aitken, the photographer and contributor of the project, was an academic physician/psychiatrist in Rehabilitation Medicine, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and retiring as Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh in 1994.
