David Livingstone was born on the 19th of March, 1813, in Shuttle Row, Blantyre. In 1840 he set sail for Africa, to become a missionary under the auspices of the London Missionary Society. He married Mary Moffat in 1845.

At the age of 10, Livingstone was sent to work in the cotton spinning mill, from 6am to 8pm, and then was expected to attend school after a 14 hour working day. He studied hard, late into the night.

These pictures show the single apartment David Livingstone was born into, in Shuttle Row, Blantyre. These tenements housed the workers for the Cotton Mills, and can still be seen.
