This is an animation of just the wheels of an industrial locomotive. It is part of a sequence of animations illustrating how pressurised steam from the boiler forces the wheels to move on a locomotive.

The connecting moving rods and shafts are all clearly shown. As the piston moves forwards, it pulls the crank pin upwards. This turns the wheels.

Steam was used increasingly to power machines in the 18th and 19th centuries. It revolutionised industry. However, of all the innovations, steam locomotion was and is still considered the triumph of steam power.
