About 360 years after the building of Rome started, soldiers from Rome captured the city of Veii and over the next 400 years, the Romans fought and conquered towns and countries, making them part of their Empire. Once they had been defeated, people in these countries were encouraged to begin living like Romans. Many people began adopting Roman customs and if they were loyal to Rome they might become Roman citizens.
