There were different ranks in the Roman Army. An ordinary soldier was called an auxiliary. More important soldiers were known as legionaries. A soldier who worked very well might be promoted and become a centurion. A centurion was in charge of a group of 80 men, called a century. There were 59 centuries in a legion and about 30 legions in the Roman Army.
