Grocers' shops, the forerunner of the today's supermarkets, stocked a wide range of foods. The customer would ask for what they wanted, and a member of staff would fetch and pack it. Many grocer's shops had difficulty during the rationing brought in during the Second World War and to reduce their running costs they employed less staff and introduced self-service shopping.
